All warehouse and office positions are full-time on-site in Redmond, Oregon. (No remote or hybrid options are available). Retail store associate positions vary by location.

Proper measures are being taken to ensure everyone's health and safety while working. You must be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to work on-site.

The standard workday is 7 am - 3 pm.

  • We are looking for experienced, passionate, and dynamic individuals to join our retail store team! We are currently hiring in Boston, Providence, and Fort Collins.

    The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, a passion for retail, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and an appreciation for science and math.

    What you’ll be doing:

    • Help customers find products by listening to their needs and offering recommendations
    • Check out customers using the cash register/POS system
    • Offer knowledge and answer questions about the brand and the products
    • Greet and engage customers, making them feel valued and eager to return
    • Collaborate with team members to create and ensure a cohesive and successful team environment
    • Receive inbound stock and deliveries
    • Check inventory levels and request additional stock deliveries from the warehouse
    • Stock shelves and maintain clean, organized displays
    • Use our project management software to communicate clearly with the team in Redmond about store status and any issues that arise
    • Answer the phone and shop emails
    • Cleaning up after customers in the shop, keeping employee bathroom and kitchen area clean, and mopping, sweeping, and dusting the shop.

  • We are looking for experienced, passionate, and dynamic individuals to join our retail store team! We are currently hiring in Boston, Providence, and Fort Collins.

    As a Retail Lead at Cognitive Surplus you will help to create a positive shopping experience for all who visit our stores. You will lead by example and provide guidance to the retail store staff. You will be the liaison between the store team and management, while supporting our mission to “create goods that show-off the beauty of science while leaving the world just a little better than we found it.”

    What you’ll be doing:

    Leadership & Operations:

    • Daily store opening and closing procedures
    • Responsible for staff schedule/shift coverage when needed
    • Clear communication between the store team and management
    • Oversee the daily store tasks and provide direction for staff

    Training:

    • Assist in training new hires
    • Keep the sales team motivated and work with the remote team to set goals for the local team, help the local team achieve these goals
    • Keep staff updated with safety and security procedures

    Customer Experience:

    • Greet customers and identify customer needs
    • Focus on customer engagement and create a personalized shopping experience
    • Resolve any customer issues that might arise
    • Build relationships to keep customers returning
    • Offer knowledge and answer questions about the brand and the products

    Visual Merchandising:

    • Responsible for organization of store displays
    • Daily restock
    • Assist with store orders
    • Maintain organized back stock items
    • Perform inventory counts as needed

    Inventory & Stock

    • Receive inbound stock and deliveries
    • Work with the team to count inventory
    • Stock shelves and maintain clean, organized displays

    Cash Handling:

    • Experience with POS systems
    • Open and close registers
    • Handle cash deposits

    Other Tasks Assigned:

    • Keep the sales floor clean and organized
    • Maintain an organized and clean break room/bathroom/back stock area
    • Laundry for towels as needed
    • Clean up after customers in the shop, keeping the employee bathroom and kitchen area clean, and mopping, sweeping, and dusting the shop.
    • Perform other maintenance tasks as needed - e.g. install or move shelving

    Who you are:

    • An experienced team leader with prior retail or customer service experience
    • A fan of Cognitive Surplus, science, and sustainability
    • A people-person who thrives in a customer service environment
    • Flexible, resourceful, adaptable to change, a quick thinker, and good at troubleshooting on the spot
    • Punctual, reliable, and available to work flexible shifts including weekdays, weekends, and holidays

    What you’ll bring:

    • Experience with customer service and retail stores strongly preferred
    • Enthusiasm for the brand
    • Experience with or and interest in building seasonal displays
    • Experience with POS systems, Shopify, and Google Sheets preferred, facility with computers and digital systems is required
    • A positive and welcoming attitude

    Things you’ll need to be able to do:

    • Lift, carry, move, load and unload boxes up to 50 lbs
    • Squat and bend, kneel repeatedly throughout your shift
    • Safely use a ladder
    • Be on your feet for the majority of your shift - 75% of each shift
    • Easily take, understand, and execute on written and oral directions
    • Utilize basic math skills to accurately complete transactions, including cash and change
    • Manage time efficiently and independently
