CretaceousâPaleogene Extinction
The FIFTH and final mass extinction event occurred around 66 million years ago, and is famously known as âThat time when a giant asteroid wiped out all the dinosaursâ. While there are many theories for the extinction varying from disease to a supernova, the âasteroid theoryâ is the most popular due to the enormous crater that was discovered off the coast of YucatÃĄn. Known as the âChicxulub Impactâ, the crater has an average diameter of roughly 110 miles, and scientists determined that to create such an impact the asteroid itself must have been 6 to 9 miles wide and traveling at about 34,000 mph. This impact instantly vaporized everything within thousands of miles, created billions of tons of dust and ash that covered the globe and led to a world-wide winter that choked out 75% of Earthâs plant and animal species.
